Things you should do as a Blogger but don't

Desk with laptop, pencils, iphone and books

I definitely fall into the camp of being a 'lazy' blogger at times. Especially working in Marketing there are some things I don't do or haven't done properly that I know I definitely should do. So today I will list them. Let me know how many you agree with in the comments below.

Not using a self-hosting platform
I am currently using Blogger as you know I should move over to self-hosting but I am so meh about it. I know the benefits its just it seems like a enormous task I don't really want to take on by myself right now.

Using stock images way too much
I know you should ideally take your own images but I do feel like a bit of an idiot doing it for my own blog - I don't know why. I don't have the jazzy motivational note pads just the standard stationary ones haha!

Not using Photoshop
This is more on the principle that I cannot really spend the money on Photoshop at the minute so I am using the free version of PicMonkey - which to be fair is pretty good.

Not having a consistent layout
I am pretty consistent with image first but titles - do I go with all capital letters or not, should I have the title within the image or just have the image bare... the list is endless!

Not consistently posting
As much as I hate to admit it - I suck at posting often. I do feel that when I post my content is of value but it isn't as often as I would like it to be. Its mainly time management and it is something I am working towards improving. This also affects my social media following as I tend to get more followers as I post my posts.

Not updating my own profile image
The one of me in my hoody - yeah that was taken when I was at Uni (and first year at that!) I have left Uni fours year ago now and have had that on my list to update but I can never find the right light/time...

BUT there is something I am good at I reckon and that is posting evergreen content. The majority of my content is evergreen (i.e. it stays relevant) long after it has been posted.

Why your blog needs a SWOT

Open laptop on a table

Hello, hello today I am writing about self evaluating your blog via a SWOT. A SWOT analysis stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It may sound boring and time consuming but by writing down what each of these are, it can visually make you see what your weaknesses are so you can tweak them to maximise your blog's potential. The strengths you don't need to ignore either - by capitalising your strengths it will help make your blog stronger.

It may sound like something that takes a lot of time but there is no point publishing content that your readers do not like to view. At the end of the day it is your blog and you can publish what you want - but if your aim is to increase readership, earn money, or increase engagement - then you need to get strategic.

To show you how a SWOT can work for you I have included a SWOT of my own blog below. If you google SWOT analysis you will see many done in a box. Personally I prefer working from a list, so I have listed them below.

SWOT for www.becbec.uk

Strengths
Own URL and professional blogger template installed.
I have full control over my blog.
I have a full - time job so don't need to worry about making money from my blog.
My social media and blog posts do very well in terms of page views and comments and that is the content I prefer writing about.
From working in marketing I know the a lot of websites to get good quality royalty free imagery etc

Weaknesses
Struggle to find the motivation to write content regularly.
Not enough regular content.
Social media strategy needs to be better.
My content away from blogging and social media do not so as well.

Opportunities
Know several contacts where I can get my work published - which gets my name out more.
Very confident about Twitter chats and hosted several chats before so can do those again.
Getting a lot better at Photoshop so can start creating some work sheets.
Know several graphic designers that if I reach out too, could help me make my brand better.

Threats
Established bloggers.
Blogging is a market that has become very saturated and it is getting harder and harder to stand out.

What have I learned from my SWOT?

So from my strengths I know that the social media and blog tips posts are my best posts so it is best to keep writing posts about them. Having a full - time job means there isn't the pressure of me having to churn out content to make money.

I know I need to work on writing regular content therefore by dedicating time per week to do this is one way where I am more likely to achieve writing and getting my content published. Again by dedicating time just for social media means that I am more likely to hit my goals of pushing more people to my site. I am going to stop writing life posts because there is no point spending my time writing them as it is not what my audience want to read.

Knowing your opportunities is easy, now it is finding the time to make the most of those opportunities. It is important because if you don't realistically have the time to take advantage you could waste other people's time and it can make your life harder in the future when you do have more time or you try to take advantage of other opportunities because people talk to each other!

Therefore, ideally by maximising on your opportunities, expanding on your strengths and working on your weaknesses this should help reduce your threats. Your threats are likely to always be there - you should always keep an eye out on what your threats are doing so you can capitalise on there failings or find a gap in the market they are not catering for.

I hope this SWOT blog post has been useful, ironically for me by listing everything down it has made the task of getting my blog up to date not as daunting as first thought. Let me know your thoughts and how you got on below.

What I Have Learnt From Contributing To Other Blogs

Although I have been quiet on here recently, this year has seen me collaborate with UK Blog Awards, Metro.co.uk and Bloggers Required which has all been good fun but I have seriously learnt a lot about collaborating what I can manage with along the way. All of which I will share below:

Be clear what you are willing to do
State at the beginning what you will be doing and be weary of anyone taking advantage of this especially if you are working for free. For example, if I started getting lots of deadlines I would seriously be considering charging or stop the collaboration.

Don't be afraid to say no
At the end of the day, I have a full time paid job so that is my priority. Don't feel pressured to take up every offer if you cannot put the time in. I have missed some stories that I could have written for metro.co.uk because I have been at work and cannot fulfil their deadlines.

Prioritise
Like I mentioned above I have a job and I am also doing a part time course which I am paying for, so these have to be first.

But you do have to do the work
If you agree to do some work and a deadline you do have to fulfil it although don't be afraid to ask for an extension if you know you are not going to be able to complete the task in the initial time.

Don't be afraid to chase up and check that you work does get published
I have no issue with chasing people up and checking that my work is published. If I am promised that my work will be published by a certain date, I will usually give about two days grace and then check to see what has happened to it. When your work is published, check that your social media details and your name etc are correct.

Look for opportunities online
I found mine through knowing people, googling and seeing an opportunity on Twitter. Most opportunities won't come to you so you have to do your best. I got my Metro role because I googled how to write for Metro, found the email address and sent them three articles I had written.

Keep it real
Don't collaborate for the sake of collaborating! metro.co.uk is just for fun and UK Blog Awards and Bloggers Required is because I like blogging and how blogs influence what people purchase.

Record all of your published work.
I keep all of my links on my Google+ profile and also in a Word Document. It is nice to look back at what you have written and also you never know when you need to draw upon it.

Finally, do respond to comments on social media
If people email or comment on your work make sure your respond back. It is really nice that people thought your work was so good that they took the time out to comment.

Have you got any advice you would want to add to my list?

Blogs I Love- Round Two

Not only do I love reading books but my passion for reading extends out to blogs. My Bloglovin (best app ever) is full of blogs and saved posts that I don't know quite what I would do if I lost them all. Anyhow here is a second dose of blogs I am enjoying at the moment.

Poppy D
I have followed Poppy Dinsey right from the beginning when WIWT (What I Wore Today) was just a blog showcasing her clothes to seeing it become a full scale business. In her personal blog Poppy talks about what is going on in her life away from WIWT. Special love goes to her wedding posts (that dress FYI!), her experience swimming in open water for charity and her post, which is a few years old now, on her jaw surgery. Poppy can write, she really can write. Her writing style is chatty and a lot of her going out and food posts are based on places in London (disadvantage of me living in the Midlands, but that's not her fault!) but she knows her stuff (Poppy is lovely on twitter too!).

FitSugar
This American blog is a great instigator in all things fitness. Sometimes there are full posts, others are just introductions to YouTube videos. However I have been saving a lot of the food and workout videos to try out later ( I haven't tried them yet but that's a different story...).

Media Marmalade
Media Marmalade is another blog that I have been following for ages. Although primarily a fashion blog I have found the posts about photography (the photography is top notch) and building a better blog to be the best posts. As Melissa's day job (being a Business Director creating communications strategies for clients), I feel this gives her advice a certain positive weighting over some others that offer blog advice.

Autumn Leaves Blog
Finally I found this site amongst the popular posts on Bloglovin. Autumn Leaves Blog focuses on improving your blog (which I definitely need) taking it to that all important next level. Each post is backed up with relevant statistics (Check out the post How To Choose The Best Social Media Network For You as a great example). I am grateful for this quality free advice as I am sure many people would charge to give the same. Indeed Rebecca runs a consultancy service and like Media Marmalade I tend to take her advice more seriously because it is her day job.

That's it for today. Are there any blogs you would recommend?

Trek America- Westerner 2 LA to La- Part 1

If anyone is thinking about going on a Trek America trip or more specifically doing the Westerner 2 tour then read on as this will be a detailed post of my experience.

As I was away for 14 days in total this post will focus on the first seven days and an additional post will focus on the final seven otherwise this post would have been mega long!

Day 1 California ( San Diego and Hollywood)
The day before we had flown in and stayed in a hotel that Trek America had recommended (Custom Hotel). We met our group leader and the group. The group leader went through typical health and safety stuff and then gave us all a list detailing what we were doing and going on each day and the food kitty. The food kitty is where everyone puts in money ($10 dollars a day) and in groups cooks a meal.  After that, we all piled in the white van and travelled to Hollywood. Whilst we were in Hollywood we took photographs of the famous sign and went to Hollywood boulevard where we walked around the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Afterwards, we travelled to San Diego and arrived at our campsite (Campland on the bay). We all set up our tents together (Mike our tour guide called it tent yoga!) and headed towards the beach. At night, Mike cooked our first meal. We had s'mores which were great as I never had them before. S'mores are essentially crackers with chocolate and marshmallows that are roasted in a camp fire.

Day Two (San Diego)
Today was a completely free day in San Diego so we decided to go to the beach in the morning and have a wander round. I didn't think there was much to do at the beach (i.e. all the shops are the usual tourist shops) however I was pretty happy as I just wanted to chill out anyway. In the afternoon, we travelled to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Old Town San Diego is considered the birthplace of California as it was the site of the first Spanish settlement.  It literally reminded me of a Disney set. We all went to a Mexican restaurant. Which served massive portions, I wish I had shared with my fiancé! Around the historic park, there are lots of small shops in the style of what would have been sold in the 1800's. I went to the little Tinsmith shop and brought a mirror and a present for my mum. Finally, we went to Balboa Park which was a bit of a disappointment really as everything was shut.

Day 3 (Lake Havasu, Arizona)

The next day we headed to Lake Haversau. Which purely served as a stopover site for the Grand Canyon. It was a long van ride. I think 5 hours long in what is desert. Before we made it to the Lake however we visited Salvation Mountain. The mountain, created from adobe clay and donated paint by Leonard Knight who was a Vietnam War veteran who died in 2014 was his tribute to God. It was nothing like I ever seen in the UK. I thought it was pretty and unique.

When we go to the campsite (River Island State Park) it was the first time where I thought I hate camping as it was so windy dust was just getting everywhere. I long abandoned any hopes of keeping my clothes clean with all the dust!  We went stargazing which was fantastic, but we could only identify the plough.

Day 4 (Grand Canyon!)
Full steam ahead to the next stop, we went to a place which had the original London Bridge.  To be honest none of the brits were that impressed with it.  It's not home and why on earth you would buy a bridge from another country to boost tourism in your own country is beyond me!
We went on a tiny part of the famous Route 66 which was really exciting for me, stopping at this diner which is famous for its milkshakes (and it's decor) and you could leave something behind on it's walls. I left behind a loyalty card.  The decor was crazy, literally everywhere contained all this crazy material even the toilets were fully decked out! Finally after a few hours we were at the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon was amazing I paid for the helicopter ride which empathised how vast the canyon is. Our pilot was lovely and gave us lots of facts. The flight was 40 minutes long and in the final twenty minutes I felt so ill I did everything in my power as not to throw up. By the time we got back my partner and I just chilled (I still felt poorly after the ride) and I had an early night.

Day 5 (Grand Canyon)

My fiancé and I woke early (quarter past six) and had a look at the sun rising in the Canyon. On that day, we walked half way down the Canyon Rim. We left at about eight to walk down and I am so glad we went early as it meant missing a lot of the crowds and also the heat! In the afternoon, we did our laundry, had a shower and went bowling in the morning and caught up with wi- fi access in the laundry room!

Day 6 and Day 7 (Hoover Dam and Las Vegas)

Everyone was looking forward to Vegas not least because it was the first day of being in a hotel. After the muck of the canyon and the tents, it was nice to be in a room to be able to repack. Before Vegas we had to stop in an In and Out burger place. I love places like Wendy's and Denny's so knew I would love In and Out.  We also stopped at the Hoover Dam for pictures.

We stayed at the Golden Nugget Hotel which was in the Fremont part of Vegas. We all decided to hire a party bus for the night (which came out of the kitty) which I was so glad we did as it was awesome. Afterwards for the over 21's we went to a club Omnia nightclub in Caesars Palace which happened to have Nicky Romero playing a set. It is an amazing nightclub and I really recommend anyone to go! On our next free day In Vegas all I did was shop, see all the sites such as the Vegas sign, Bellagio Fountains, Ceasars Palace and dabbled in a bit of gambling. At first I wished I had more than two days at Vegas to experience it but two days was enough for me.

What am I rocking on my Bloglovin' recently?
(Source: Authors Own)

I absolutely love reading blogs. I prefer reading fashion and beauty blogs and rarely read a magazine anymore because of them. My Bloglovin' (which is seriously one of the best apps ever invented) is full to the bring with some fantastic blogs I read and click that little heart. I share a few of my best below:

A Beautiful Mess (ABM) is run by two sisters Emma Chapman and Elsie Larson. This lifestyle blog has lots of beautiful homemade crafts and food that you can actually achieve yourself at home! The blog is laid out very well. There are so many images in the articles that it appeals greatly to the magpie in me. The photography on ABM blog is high quality due to their amazing professional photographer and the staff's skills. Their tutorials are written well and I really want to try the Illustrated Tree Slices and the Marbled Clay Ring Dish.  The How to Stay Motivated & Achieve Your Goals series has encouraged me to set little prizes for the goals I hit. Although the blog is American you can get the majority of materials they use in the UK. Which is a plus point as I have read US blogs and have ended up wanting after the products I cannot have! This blog is perfect for those who like art and crafty projects, food and good photography. Speaking of photography you will love their Instagram page.

From Roses is a beauty and lifestyle blog by 23-year-old Rebecca who is based in Nottingham. I found From Roses by looking at the suggested blogs on Bloglovin. Rebecca's posts are well written and thought out. A couple of posts that really struck out for me was when she talked about losing her mother to cancer. I am very lucky to not have experienced a loss like this but the way Rebecca spoke about mum losing her fight to cancer and how Rebecca coped with it after (particularly as she went to university not long after she lost her mum) really struck a chord with me. As the writing felt so raw and to be able to share such a private moment with her readers on such a sensitive topic written so well was heartfelt. The second post on a lighter note about how to save money I enjoyed. As someone who is conscious of saving money myself, I related to the post so well that I tweeted her to tell her so!

Vivannadoesmakeup
Anna needs no introduction. Creator and author of the blog and video site Vivannadoesmakeup. I love the way Anna writes her posts on a variety of topics. My favourite posts are about fitness. Anna writes really succinct posts about beauty products and I find she is the first blog I click onto if I want to try something different.

Wonder Forest
My final blog is all about Dana and Wonderforest. This Canadian blogger is super talented having first created personalised layouts for Myspace and then moved to blog layouts. Dana has also branched out to developing apps, designing stationery and other bits and bobs to sell online. I found Dana's blog posts about how she started in business and how she coped with setbacks a real inspiration to read. Her experience designing for companies (she designed Kylie Minogue's myspace site don't ya know!) means her posts about blog design and tech help I take very seriously. Dana has a fun, playful yet serious side about her which results in me always coming back to read more.

This is it for the blogs I recommend. Which blogs would you recommend?

Balancing A Blog And A Full Time Job

It is hard trying to balance
a blog, job and free time

This is something which if you look at my blog and the amount of posts I manage to write you can see I struggle at and that is balancing a blog and a full-time job. Many bloggers are in full-time employment or have other time-consuming activities can still manage it- yet I find it very hard. I have read countless number of blogs detailing how bloggers do it and have tried some of their recommendations, but I still struggle. Therefore, today's post essentially details why I find it hard. I hope I find other bloggers reading this can relate to some of these points.

Sheer tiredness.
As well as having a full-time job I spend an hour each way travelling to and from work (yes I admit some people do think I am mad). In total that's about 10 hours away from my house. So when I get back all I want to do is flop in front of the telly or read a book. I have a partner at home as well so want to spend time with him and after I have done the housework I don't have much time left to settle down and write a blog post before bed. I have tried writing posts on the train, but it is hard with limited internet connection (and I don't want to buy WiFi for the train).

Looking at a screen all day
As my job is looking at a computer screen for 7 1/2 hours a day (and sometimes writing articles as well), the last thing I want to do is look at a computer screen for the rest of the evening. I am also conscious that I will be damaging my eyes long term if I keep looking at a screen. My eyes really ache sometimes from looking at a screen so long that I get headaches so I have to limit the number of hours I stare at the screen.

Things just keep popping up
I exercise twice a week in the evenings (and I am way too tired after a circuits session to write a post!) and then something else will come up = no time to work on the blog.

Does anybody else suffer from balancing a blog and a full time job?
